Diversity in organizational leadership is critical for bringing fresh perspectives, driving innovation, and fostering a more inclusive organizational culture. Each year, the United Nations recognizes May 21st as World Diversity Day to highlight and stimulate discussion around intercultural diversity and work to solve many of the existing global challenges.

While there has been plenty of talk in recent years around diversity in for-profit organizations, nonprofits need help with many of the same challenges in attracting and retaining diverse leadership.

One study found that nonprofit organizations significantly needed more diversity at the executive level, with people of color representing only 13 percent of executive director and president positions. While another survey conducted by Battalia Winston in 2017 showed that 87 percent of nonprofit executive directors are white, just six percent are African American, four percent are Hispanic, and three percent are Asian.

Furthermore, a 2018 report by the Center for Effective Philanthropy found that 70 percent of CEOs believe their organizations’ staff should represent their communities, with 61 percent and 55 percent saying the same about their…
